On Dec 19, 2011, twenty more substances were included on the Substances of Very High Concern (SVHC) Candidate List for authorization by the European Chemical Agency (ECHA). The list now contains 73 substances in total. In October 2011, ECHA has published its 2012 work program. Stronger growth of the Candidate List will be one of its goals which means that the list will expand to 136 chemicals by the end of 2012.

All of the 20 newly added SVHCs, except 4-tert-octylphenol, are Carcinogenic/Mutagenic/toxic for Reproduction (CMR) substances. 4-tert-octylphenol is classified as endocrine disruptor (category 1) and the first substance of Equivalent level of Cconcern (Ev. C) which was included in the SVHC Candidate List. For future SVHC Candidate List updates, ECHA will turn to new substances which are not already identified and regulated due to their known and recognized CMR properties. Besides, the two Refractory Ceramic Fibers (RCF) which are already on the list since 2010 have new definition as proposed by Germany. The new definition provides a wider substance range to cover all types of RCF used in the EU.

The potential uses of the 20 newly added SVHCs are summarized in the following table:
