GSTC GLOBAL SUSTAINABLE TOURISM CERTIFICATION

GSTC GLOBAL SUSTAINABLE TOURISM CERTIFICATION

The tourism industry is one of the key contributors to global GDP. According to the World Travel & Tourism Council (WTTC), the tourism sector is projected to contribute USD 11.7 trillion to the global economy by 2025, accounting for approximately 10.3% of global GDP. This sector creates a wide range of job opportunities and drives diverse industries such as accommodation, transportation, food and beverage, retail, culture, and crafts, making it a crucial force in stimulating local economies.

However, as industries across the globe place greater emphasis on ESG and sustainable development, expectations for the tourism industry are also evolving. The tourism sector must redefine its operational models to take responsibility for sustainable management, community friendliness, and respect for local cultures and economies. This transformation requires collaborative action from tourism-related businesses and destinations alike.

The UN Tourism (Formerly the United Nations World Tourism Organization, UNWTO) defined sustainable tourism as "tourism that takes full account of its current and future economic, social, and environmental impacts, addressing the needs of visitors, the industry, the environment, and host communities."

GSTC Global Sustainable Tourism Council

The GSTC Standards, administered by the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC), is the authoritative benchmark for sustainable development in the global tourism industry. The GSTC Standards are widely adopted across various sectors, including Destinations (governments, tourism boards), Hotels/Accommodations (such as, international hotels, inns, B&Bs),   Tour Operators (travel platforms or travel agencies), MICE (venues, event planners, MICE organizations), and Attractions (theme parks, museums, and national parks), serving as a vital benchmark for measuring sustainability performance in the tourism industry. The GSTC Standards cover four key pillars: (A) Sustainable management; (B) Socioeconomic impacts; (C) Cultural impacts; and (D) Environmental impacts.
