5G RedCap (Reduced Capability), also known as 5G NR-Light, is a version of 5G designed for mid-tier use cases. It provides a balanced mix of throughput, battery life, complexity, and device density, making it cost-effective for various applications that don't require the high-performance features of regular 5G technology. The concept was introduced in 3GPP Release 17 for 5G NR.

Dikin Yang, Manager of SGS Wireless Laboratory said: "SGS has always been committed to providing the world's highest quality testing and inspection services. We are very honored to be the first laboratory in Taiwan to qualify as a 5G RedCap verification laboratory. This is not only an affirmation of SGS's professional capabilities in the 5G field, but also demonstrates our commitment to assisting customers in achieving innovation and breakthroughs"

Key functions and application scenarios of 5G RedCap:

5G RedCap, or NR-Light, serves as a device platform that bridges the capability and complexity gap within 5G, offering an optimized design for mid-tier use cases. It is particularly suited for wearables (such as smart watches, wearable medical devices, AR/VR goggles), industrial wireless sensors, and video surveillance.

5G RedCap devices efficiently operate in narrower bandwidths, like 20 MHz in sub-7 GHz or 100 MHz in millimeter-wave (mmWave) frequency bands. They use a single transmit antenna, a single receive antenna (with optional support for two antennas), offer optional support for half-duplex FDD, lower-order modulation (with 256-QAM being optional), and support lower transmit power. The reduced complexity results in more cost-efficient 5G RedCap devices, longer battery life, and a smaller device footprint, enabling innovative designs for a wide range of use cases.

Currently, mid-tier IoT devices primarily rely on LTE Cat-1bis and LTE Cat-4 devices for wide-area wireless connectivity and mobility. While LTE networks are expected to coexist with 5G networks in the near future, 5G RedCap introduces a new level of capability, efficiency, and flexibility. It delivers higher throughput, lower latency, longer battery life, improved network security, and an optimized cost structure for applications in this category. As the evolution of 5G continues, there will be a transition from 4G to 5G by communication service providers. In this context, 5G RedCap emerges as the preferred platform for future-proofing new mid-tier IoT designs.

In order to ensure the quality and performance of 5G RedCap products, SGS Taiwan Wireless Laboratory took the lead in cooperating with test and measurement equipment manufacturers to provide pre-test services, and obtained samples from chip manufacturers in advance for comparison and verification. We will continue to be committed to providing excellent technical support and testing services to our customers, including performance evaluation, interoperability testing, security testing, etc. This series of tests not only ensured compliance with various 5G RedCap technical standards, but also verified that SGS's testing laboratory has highly sophisticated testing equipment and a professional technical team that can meet customers' high requirements for quality and reliability.

SGS believes that this will provide a reliable platform for Taiwan's communication equipment manufacturers, network operators and other 5G RedCap related industries to ensure that its 5G RedCap equipment and solutions meet the highest global standards and assist Taiwanese enterprises to have breakthroughs and successes in the 5G era. This marks a new step for SGS Taiwan in promoting Taiwan's technology industry, and also demonstrates SGS's leading position in the global 5G field.
