SGS Taiwan receives authorization to perform Wi-Fi TAS verifications

SGS Taiwan was the first lab in the world to receive approval from MediaTek to perform TA-SAR WLAN verifications for phones and, in December 2023, helped a customer achieve certification of the first-ever smartphone supporting MTK TA-SAR WLAN. SGS Taiwan was also among the first wave of labs authorized by Qualcomm to perform FastConnect Wi-Fi TAS verifications in February 2024.  SGS Taiwan has extensive experience in performing TAS verifications for global brands such as Samsung, HP, Dell, etc., for devices including smartphones, tablets, and laptop computers.

"We are very pleased to receive Wi-Fi TAS testing authorizations from MTK and Qualcomm. These authorizations serve as proof of SGS Taiwan's professional capabilities in SAR testing, allowing us to provide customers with a comprehensive set of services. We will continue to work closely with our customers to provide the highest-quality testing and certification services,” John Yeh, SGS Taiwan SAR Lab Manager, said.

A brief introduction to Specific Absorption Rate (SAR)

wireless communication devices becoming ever more popular nowadays, many countries around the world have enacted strict regulations to ensure that the RF energy emitted from such a device does not cause harm to the human body.  Here is a table summarizing the RF exposure regulatory requirements for portable wireless devices sold to the US, Canada, and EU markets:

TAS Algorithm Verifications

A modern-day smart portable wireless device contains multiple radios employing 2G-to-5G, Wi-Fi, and Bluetooth technologies with antennas covering multiple frequency bands. To ensure that such a device complies with SAR regulatory requirements while meeting high expectations for today’s 5G devices, modem chipset providers have developed TAS algorithms to intelligently manage transmit power across multiple antennas to help significantly extend network coverage and improve uplink speeds.

Since SAR limits are averaged over a specified time reference period and the majority of the cellular transmission is bursty by nature, TAS dynamically optimizes the radio to deliver maximum output power, which produces higher SAR, when a strong uplink connection is required and to reduce the power, thereby lowering SAR, most of the time when it isn’t, thereby ensuring regulatory compliance when averaged over the specified time window.

Application and overview of TAS

Once a TAS algorithm is developed, SAR compliance demonstration with regulatory bodies is required before the algorithm can be deployed in any portable wireless device.  A portable wireless device implementing an approved TAS algorithm may then be submitted to a test lab approved to perform TAS algorithm verifications for SAR compliance testing and certification.

SGS Taiwan provides TAS testing services

Since measuring SAR on a device supporting TAS is very complicated, to ensure that test labs possess the needed competence to perform such tests, chipset vendors supplying TAS algorithms require labs to receive their approvals before they are authorized to provide such testing services.

SGS Taiwan has extensive experience in SAR testing and has received TAS verification authorizations from MTK and Qualcomm. SGS Taiwan can provide you with the following services:

  • TAS Consultations
  • TAS Testing
  • TAS Certifications
