CTIA OTA test plan V6.0 decrypted: new test standards and future development trends!

The release of CTIA OTA test plan V6.0 and the planning of future versions fully demonstrate CTIA’s determination to promote the development of wireless communication technology. As wireless technology continues to evolve, the CTIA OTA test program will continue to innovate and safeguard the development of the wireless industry.

CTIA OTA test plan V6.0 decrypted: new test standards and future development trends!

With the rapid development of 5G, Internet of Things, Wi-Fi 6E and other technologies, the wireless communications industry is facing unprecedented changes. In order to ensure that the device maintains excellent performance in a complex and ever-changing network environment, the CTIA OTA (Over-the-Air) test program has also kept pace with the times and launched version 6.0.

The V6.0 not only adds a number of new test standards, but also covers the latest technologies such as 5G mmWave and Wi-Fi 6E, which fully reflects CTIA’s enthusiasm in promoting industry development. This upgrade will help manufacturers, network operators and testing laboratories better cope with technical challenges, enhance product competitiveness, and provide users with a better wireless experience.

CTIA OTA V 6.0 is mainly updated in the following aspects:

  • NR FR1 SA A-GNSS: A-GPS L1: Added support for A-GPS L1 in NR FR1 SA mode to improve the accuracy of positioning services.
  • New frequency bands: Expanded support for multiple 5G frequency bands such as n48, n77, n12, n14, n30, n26, etc. to adapt to spectrum allocation in different regions around the world.
  • NR FR1 SA carrier aggregation (CA): 2DL/3DL CA (single uplink carrier): Added support for 2DL/3DL CA (single uplink carrier) in NR FR1 SA mode to increase data transmission rate.
  • Added FR1 EN-DC frequency band combination: Extended support for FR1 EN-DC (E-UTRAN New Radio Dual Connectivity) frequency band combination to enhance network connection flexibility.
  • 5G mmWave OTA testing: Added support for 5G mmWave OTA testing to address the challenges of high-frequency band communications.
  • Wi-Fi 6E OTA testing: Added support for Wi-Fi 6E OTA testing to ensure the performance of Wi-Fi 6E devices.

These updates reflect the industry's shift toward more sophisticated testing requirements to ensure wireless devices operate properly in diverse network environments.

CTIA OTA testing program continues to evolve

The development of the CTIA OTA testing program never stops. In future versions, we will have more exciting enhancements:

  • Enhanced human body model testing: Introduce chest model (Chest Phantom) and ankle model (Ankle Phantom) to more realistically simulate the impact of the human body on wireless devices.
  • Extended carrier aggregation (CA) testing:
    • Added NR 2DL/3DL CA, EN-DC and NR-DC frequency band combinations to provide a more comprehensive carrier aggregation test solution.
    • NR FR1 SA combination of two uplink CAs to meet more diverse network configuration requirements.
    • EN-DC combination is combined with multiple LTE frequency bands (2CC LTE CA + 1NR) to achieve more complex network connection scenarios.
  • New frequency bands:
    • n77 (R3): 3450 ~ 3650 MHz (Canada), extending support for Canadian frequency bands.
    • n77 (R4): 3650 ~ 3980 MHz, covering a wider range of n77 frequency band.
  • NR FR1 RedCap (low functionality mode) test: Added test support for NR FR1 RedCap (low functionality mode) to meet the low power consumption requirements of IoT devices.
  • Extended A-GNSS and Galileo testing:
    • LTE A-Galileo E5A, improves Galileo positioning accuracy under LTE networks.
    • NR FR1 EN-DC A-Galileo E5A, enhanced Galileo positioning performance in NR FR1 EN-DC mode.
    • NR FR1 SA A-Galileo E5A, ensuring Galileo positioning reliability in NR FR1 SA mode.
    • NR FR1 SA A-GNSS: A-GPS L5 and A-Galileo E1, providing more diverse GNSS testing options.
    • NR FR1 EN-DC A-GNSS: A-GPS L5 and A-Galileo E1, extending GNSS test capabilities in NR FR1 EN-DC mode.

These upgrades are closely aligned with the development trends of 5G, Internet of Things (IoT) and next-generation wireless applications, and will further strengthen the integrity of CTIA's OTA testing program.

The update to V6.0 not only focuses on the present, but also looks to the future, covering a number of testing standards for cutting-edge technologies, pointing out the direction for the development of the wireless communications industry. The CTIA OTA testing program will continue to lead the industry and bring us a better wireless future.
