SGS Awards GSTC Certification to Lion Travel, Recognizing Its Low-Carbon Transformation

On May 27, 2026, SGS awarded the Global Sustainable Tourism Council (GSTC) Certification to Lion Travel, recognizing its progress in sustainable management and low-carbon tourism.
Lion Travel met the requirements of the GSTC Tour Operator Standard across four key themes: sustainable management, socio-economic impact, cultural heritage, and environmental protection. The certification reflects the company’s ongoing efforts to integrate sustainability into its operations and travel offerings.
A Milestone Toward International Standards
The award ceremony took place at Lion Travel’s headquarters in Taipei. The certificate was received by Chairman and Chief Sustainability Officer, Mr. Hsin-Chuan Huang, marking the company’s alignment with internationally recognized sustainability standards.
Representatives from Global Sustainable Tourism Council and SGS attended the ceremony, highlighting collaboration between industry and international organizations in advancing sustainable tourism.
SGS noted that Lion Travel has embedded sustainability into its management systems, operations, and resource planning, demonstrating a structured and consistent approach to ESG.
Strengthening Competitiveness Through GSTC Standard
The Global Sustainable Tourism Council is widely recognized for setting global standards in sustainable tourism. Its Tour Operator Standard provides a practical framework for companies to manage sustainability across their business.
As sustainability becomes a baseline expectation in the global tourism industry, GSTC Certification helps companies build trust, improve transparency, and strengthen their position in international markets.
Sustainability as a Core Strategy
Mr. Steven Chiou, Managing Director of SGS Taiwan Ltd said:
“Sustainability is no longer optional in tourism—it is becoming the standard. GSTC provides a clear framework for industries to put sustainability into practice. We are pleased to recognize Lion Travel’s efforts and look forward to seeing it contribute to broader industry progress.
Mr. Hsin-Chuan Huang, Chairman and Chief Sustainability Officer of Lion Travel, added:
“Our goal is to make sustainability part of every journey. We continue to integrate ESG principles into how we design our products and run our operations, while sharing Taiwan with the world.”

Expanding Low-Carbon Travel
In recent years, Lion Travel has focused on developing railway-based tourism, working with Taiwan Railways and the Alishan Forest Railway to promote lower-carbon travel options and deeper travel experiences. The company is also strengthening its sustainable supply chain as it prepares for growing global demand.
Looking Ahead
SGS will continue to support tourism and hospitality industries in adopting GSTC standards, helping them strengthen their competitiveness in the global sustainable tourism market.
