SGS Fimko Officially Approved as a Notified Body under the EU Battery Regulation

SGS Obtains Notified Body Designation under the EU Battery Regulation

Recently, SGS Fimko Oy, a certification body under the SGS Group, has officially passed the assessment by the notifying authority of Finland, an EU Member State, and has been designated as a Notified Body under the EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542.

This milestone signifies that SGS is now able to provide third-party conformity assessment services for global battery manufacturers in compliance with the EU’s latest regulatory requirements, facilitating the smooth entry of battery products into the EU market.

What Is the EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542?

The EU Battery Regulation (EU) 2023/1542 has fully replaced the former Battery Directive (2006/66/EC), establishing full life-cycle management requirements for the safety, sustainability, and information disclosure of battery products.

In accordance with the EU Battery Regulation, specific categories of batteries must undergo conformity assessment by a Notified Body before they can be placed on the EU market bearing an NB authorized CE mark.

SGS Provides Compliance Support for the EU Battery Regulation

As a Notified Body, SGS Fimko will provide enterprises with full life-cycle conformity assessment services for batteries in accordance with the EU Battery Regulation, relevant implementing acts, and harmonized standards, including:

  • Testing and assessment of restricted substances, performance, and safety of batteries
  • Review of technical documentation and labelling
  • Audits of quality assurance systems

Meanwhile, SGS Fimko has also completed the scope extension audit for carbon footprint and recycled content requirements. The relevant capabilities and certifications will be updated in due course, at which point SGS Fimko will become one of the Notified Bodies with the most comprehensive authorizations under the Battery Regulation.

Key Compliance Milestones for the EU Battery Regulation

Regarding the phased implementation requirements of the EU Battery Regulation, SGS particularly reminds exporting enterprises to pay close attention to the following key compliance milestones and prepare in advance:

  1. Currently in effect: All batteries placed on the EU market must comply with general requirements regarding safety, performance, sustainability, and waste battery management.
  2. From February 2027: Industrial batteries with a capacity greater than 2 kWh, LMT batteries, and EV batteries must be equipped with a Digital Battery Passport.
  3. From August 2027: Due diligence obligations for economic operators will come into effect.

As the EU Battery Regulation is being implemented in phases, enterprises need to understand the applicable compliance requirements and plan ahead. SGS’s expert team can provide comprehensive services based on different product types and stages of preparation, ranging from regulatory interpretation, testing and verification, technical documentation review, and quality assurance system assessment, to product carbon footprint assessment, recycled content verification, and Digital Battery Passport solutions.
