Software And Firmware Permissive Change Waiver Expanded for Certain Covered UAS and Routers

On May 8, 2026, the FCC announced an update to the waiver that allows manufacturers of all Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS), UAS critical components, and routers produced in a foreign countries and area that were authorized for use in the US prior to these devices being added to the Covered List to continue to deliver software and firmware updates that mitigate harm to consumers.

The main changes are as follows:

• The waiver deadline is extended at least until January 1, 2029.
• Class II, in addition to Class I, permissive changes are allowed.
