What is SAR and SAR testing?

SAR stands for Specific Absorption Rate.  According to FCC, SAR is a measure of the rate of RF energy absorption by the body from the source, e.g., a cell phone, being measured. SAR testing provides a means for measuring the RF exposure characteristics of mobile wireless devices that are used within a certain proximity of the human body. SAR testing ensures that such devices are within the safety guidelines set by regulatory bodies of various countries and regions around the world before they can be sold in these markets.

According to the FCC, SAR testing uses standardized models of the human head and body that are filled with liquids that simulate the RF absorption characteristics of different human tissues.

In order to determine compliance:

  1. The device is precisely placed in various common positions next to the head and body phantoms to simulate the way different users typically hold or place the device, including each side of the head.
  2. The device shall be operating at its highest power level in all the frequency bands in which it operates.
  3. A robotic probe takes a series of measurements of the electric field at specific pinpoint locations in 2D and 3D grid-like patterns within the dummy head and torso.
  4. The highest SAR values for each frequency band must be below the regulatory limits to demonstrate compliance.

Should you have any doubts about whether your mobile wireless device is in need of SAR testing to meet a particular market’s regulatory requirements, SGS will be very happy to assist you to make the proper determination and offer the necessary testing and certification services.
